A three vehicle head-on crash critically injured a 17-year-old Midland driver this morning, and hospitalized a 58-year-old Midland resident.
The crash occurred at 7:38 a.m. on Meridian Road just south of Miller Road when a 58-year-old Midland resident driving north crossed the centerline after suffering a medical emergency, according to a media release from the Michigan State Police post in Bay City. That vehicle struck a southbound vehicle driven by the 17-year-old. The driver traveling behind the 17-year-old’s vehicle, a 32-year-old Bay City resident, was unable to avoid the crash and also struck the northbound vehicle.
The 17-year-old was trapped inside the vehicle and the Jaws of Life were used.
Names are not being released by troopers as the crash remains under investigation.
The 17-year-old was flown by FlightCare helicopter to Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw for treatment of life threatening injuries. Firefighters from Lee and Homer township fire departments set up a landing zone and the helicopter flew over the scene on the way to a hospital just before 9 a.m.
The 58-year-old was taken by ambulance to MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The third driver refused treatment.
Two of the vehicles involved, both red SUVs, came to rest in ditches, one on each side of the roadway. Both pointed south. The third vehicle was a white truck, and it came to rest facing north in the southbound lane.
Midland County Sheriff’s deputies blocked Meridian Road at both Miller and Gordonville roads for state police troopers to investigate the scene and reconstruct the accident. The roadway was reopened before a 3 p.m. check.
Troopers ask that anyone who was traveling on Meridian Road between Frost Road in Saginaw County and Miller Road in Midland County between 7:15 a.m. and 7:38 a.m. who may have seen anything related to the crash contact Trooper Jim Lang at (989) 684-2234.
